Our Comprehensive Substance Abuse Counselor - In Training (SAC-IT) and Substance Abuse Counselor (SAC) / Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) Program is ready to get you started on your new career path, or expand your credentials and capabilities in your current profession. The ASAP Education Program meets all Wisconsin State Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) requirements and qualifications. Taught by experienced professionals working in the field providing you the solid foundation you'll need to succeed in the specialty of addiction counseling.

Course outline

100 HOUR SAC-IT Pre-certification Teaching Goals:

  • Students will understand the neuropathophysiological changes with addiction.
  • Students will identify and distinguish addictive substances and behaviors, as well as the diagnostic criteria for substance abuse disorders.
  • Students will be introduced to the process of screening for substance use disorders and the biopsychosocial assessment.
  • Students will be able to utilize ASAM criteria to inform treatment placement decision-making and refer to the appropriate level of care.
  • Students will understand and develop basic counseling skills for working with clients struggling with substance use issues.
  • Students will identify ethical issues relevant to the practice of addiction counseling.
  • Students will understand the meaning of cultural competence as it relates to addiction counseling. Students will demonstrate the ability to be respectful of diverse backgrounds and special populations (i.e., adolescents, older adults, women, LGBTQ, minorities etc.).

260 HOUR SAC/CSAC Certification Teaching Goals:

  • Students will understand a variety of models and theories of addiction counseling and be able to apply these theories in practice.
  • Students will conduct screening and biopsychosocial assessments and use these to refer clients to appropriate level of care.
  • Students will understand the importance of treatment planning with the client’s input and how to utilize the treatment plan to inform proper care.
  • Students will identify personal biases and blind spots.
  • Students will understand the meaning of cultural competence as it relates to addiction counseling. Students will demonstrate the ability to be respectful of diverse backgrounds and special populations (i.e., adolescents, older adults, women, LGBTQ, minorities etc.).
  • Have a working knowledge of NADAAC Code of Ethics
